Suspect Scott #349, Used Single.

I bought this stamp on EBay for $5.00 as a suspect fake with the goal of getting it off of the market and doing a proper analysis on it.  The catalog price for a used #349 is a modest $100.00 and can be faked by adding perforations to trimmed #344, adding perforations to a #344E, trimming perforations off of at left and / or right of a #332 and trimming perforations from the left or right of a #332a.

The suspect was looked at by the previous owner and listed below are their findings.

·         21.3mm

·         DL WM

·         Trimmed fake 349.

I looked at the watermark to see what orientation it was in and found it to be in a vertical orientation.

This is the raw image taken from my Signoscope watermark detector showing the double line watermark at the top of the stamp.

This is the same image that has been rotated to the left 90° and enhanced to bring out the water mark.

This is my template placed over a full size illustration of double line watermarks showing the actual orientation.

As can be seen in the above iamges the watermark is vertical, reversed and reads from the top to the bottom. This proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the suspect is a booklet pane single.

Conclusion: since the suspect is a booklet single it can be nothing more than a trimmed #332a booklet pane single.
