Suspect Scott #387, Unused Pair with 3mm Spacing.

This suspect was analyzed for a client of mine and if this was a genuine stamp it would be a moderately expensive stamp - $475.00 catalog value and is often faked. This stamp can be made by adding perforations to a trimmed imperforate #383, adding perforations to an imperforate horizontal coil #383H or trimming the perforations off the top and/or bottom of a perforated #374.

The watermark is single line, normal and reads horizontal.

The suspect’s perforations were overlaid on an Instanta gauge.

As can be seen the perforations are spot on but have issues:

  • The center perforations are too round and too clean (Fig. 1).
  • The left and right perforations are too clean and are more round than oval shaped.
  • The left and right perforation tips appear to have been rubbed with an abrasive to get the fuzzy torn look (Fig. 2).
  • The center perforation holes are slightly smaller than genuine gauge 12 perforations (Fig. 3).

Conclusion: In my opinion the suspect is a #383 with fake perforations added. This is a well-executed fake.

the client submitted the suspect pair to the William Weiss Expertizing Service and a certificate was returned stating the suspect was indeed a #383 with fake perforations added.
